The cause of this problem was identified in July 2024 and the solution was given in viewtopic.php?t=373071 which was to add

to cmdline.txt. An alternative was to enable PINN's VNC feature.
However, neither appear to work anymore, so I need to do some more investigation.

I think there must have been something wrong with the way I typed in the video mode, because I have just retested PINN v3.9, v3.9.3 and v3.9.8 and all of them work headlessly on a Pi5 if you add to cmdline.txt. The capital 'D' is the important letter to create a framebuffer even if no monitor is attached.
