I've stopped at 660 MHz not so much because of heat, but because of current, that can become destructive by high current density and strong electric fields, it can literally displace atoms...
It's OK to play with low impedance, it can work well if you tune it, and can learn a lot (with an oscilloscope).
Though, if you need long cables, better think of Ethernet, there are several chips integrated with RP2 family.
