Between choosing the right OS, the first setup, using the terminal, SSH, and common beginner issues (power supply, SD card quality, HDMI display problems…), it’s not always obvious what the best approach is

FWIW, I'd recommend starting off with a PI 4 or 5 (or P400 or P500). I would get at least 4GB of memory. That way you can use a run the full desktop GUI. In other words, stay away from the PI Zero and PICO. Connect monitor, mouse and keyboard (if you are not using a P400 or 500)

Use the official installer to install a 64 bit version of the latest PI OS (Trixie). See https://www.raspberrypi.com/software/
