Well that may explain the OP's problem then. Without a compass I can't see how they can even keep in parallel lines.The GPS receiver in question does not have a magnetometer.So yes, it's not the GPS receiver itself but the internal compass. But the method is correct.
All the ones in our farm equipment do and always say to calibrate them this way when you turn them on.
