Thank you for the thoughts and experience info regarding your use of 5v VCC for you I2C devices. I only have recent experience of the two devices I have been playing with as part of a project that am working on for my guitar playing.
As I believe one of the other respondents was implying, the Pico pulling the SDA/SCL lines to ground would probably involve negligible current flow so has not caused an issue. As I am wanting these devices working hard for prolonged periods that is why I am trying find a better solution.
