This did the trick. Thanks for the solution and the explanation behind it!There was a recent change to WayVNC which means only the same user can log into the user's session. Otherwise a user (without sudo capability) can gain it by logging into the device as the pi user through WayVNC. So WayVNC checks that the user running the WayVNC client is the same user as is logging in.
To change this I think you can just remove:
/etc/pam.d/wayvnc
