Here's a way to install a hotspot more reliably and quickly: viewtopic.php?p=2323523#p2323523
thank you for this. I will try it out.

There seem to be some serious bugs with using nmcli to create an AP. I have an openvpn tunnel under control of network-manager and before setting up the AP it was totally solid. I could plug the pi into an internet connection, unplug it, plug it in again, reboot, and the vpn would "just work" as soon as network-manager could find an internet connection. As soon as I created the AP, the VPN became unstable. It wouldn't come up automatically with "unknown error" if I try to nmcli con up tun0. The only thing that would work was to manually restart openvpn.

I just removed the AP, and the VPN is stable again.

If I remove wlan0 from network-manager and bring it up the AP with hostapd then everything works, except that I can't use network-manager to add wlan0 to the bridge (because there is no "connection" in network-manager).

If your solution doesn't work then I think that the answer is to remove wlan0 from connection-manager again, manage it with hostapd and write scripts that set up the bridge using brctl
