believe the hat / software interaction with the hat maybe what's causing the problem, I want to leave the hat on to at least remove that possibility

The hardware solution proposed would allow you to continue to use the HAT.


But if the HAT is well implemented and supported by the supplier it should be possible to find out whether there is any potential interaction by reading documentation and/or reading the corresponding code.

If that represents the HAT you have it suggests that the GPIO pins assigned for use by the serial console UART are potentially used by the PM5003 sensor.

Maybe PiMoRoNi themselves would be best placed to advise on the issues you are experiencing?
