I must correct my assumption that core1 was not running - the problem was that I was using the Internal LED of the Pico (2) W for signalling activity, but the LED is connected to the CYW43 - and digitalWrite actually talks to the CYW43, which IMO does not initialize correctly when VBUS is not present.
Quite interesting that you have a VSYS-powered application with wireless functions operating!
That increases my hope that it's just something trivial!
I will try to find the problematic code location using a debug probe, ASAP.
