General discussion • Canakit Pi 5 w/ SSD Kit and heat

I recently upgraded to an RPi 5 8GB. It's a Canakit bundle with the black case. I then upgraded it with the official Raspberry Pi SSD Kit, 256GB in my case. This includes a vertical case extension giving more room on top. So now the fan cools the SSD Kit and the main Pi 5 board is shielded from the fan. When I remote into the desktop from my PC, the temps easily jump up to over 70 C. Currently without the remote desktop running, it's idling around 62 C. But I've seen it spike briefly to 80 C.

Obviously this isn't going to work in the long term. I could put a fan underneath the Canakit Pi case. It has vent holes on the bottom. But that's yet another piece of hardware external to the Pi and an annoyance.

I'm not sure if Canakit has a solution for this. I'll be emailing them shortly. Note: I see they stock the "Raspberry Pi 5 Active Cooler" for a mere $5.00. But could that interfere with the SSD Kit?

Perhaps other cases are in order. I think the official SSD Kit is a design error in that it blocks air flow from top mounted fans. I've seen fans mounted right on top of a heat sink on the board. Again note the "Raspberry Pi 5 Active Cooler" above.

I'm open to ideas...
