I highly recommend PiVPN with Wireguard. I am pretty bad at networks, and I was able to set it up in minutes, installing and opening a port in the router included. You only have to create clients for the devices that you plan to take outside of your LAN. For a phone you can easily create a QR-code with the configuration, and for a PC you can copy a config file that is automatically created when you add the client.
Having a shared folder on my LAN with Samba, I have now access to all my music (or any other files you wish to share) on my phone and laptop from anywhere in the world. Repeated the process for the wife so she has access to the music now too.
I also now have access to a Grafana server with temperature data, which is not open to the internet, so before I could only see the data when I was at home, now I also have it available everywhere.
