I have a D-link DWA-181 (AC1300). With Pi 4 and latest Raspberry Pi OS (Bookworm), it is actually plug-and-play.
I did turn off the on-board wifi (by putting 'blacklist brcmfmac' and 'blacklist brcmutil' in /etc/modprobe.d/raspi-blacklist.conf) before I booted with the D-link, but I think it would also have worked without that. In any case, very happy with it. It is very small and works perfectly. I have the P4 in a metal enclosure (old repurposed laptop case), which made the on-board wifi un-usable.
